Start the New Season with a New Shooting Strategy

It's that time of year again, basketball coaches across the country are prepping for the start of a new basketball season.

So, what will your shooting strategy be this season?

At the collegiate level, the 2012-2013 season marked a new low for scoring. According to the NCAA statistics, the national points per game average for Division 1 teams was 67.5, the lowest since 1951-1952. Within the Preseason issue of Coaching Management Basketball, author Mary Kate Murphy interviews various coaches regarding this statistic and reviews their take on why the percentage is so low. Here are 3 suggested reasons discussed in the article:

  • Shot Clock is too long in men's game.
  • Game is too Physical making it harder to score around the rim.
  • Stagnant Station-to-Station offenses

Ms. Murphy outlines interviews a number of different coaches who explore these three suggested reasons as to why shooting percentage was so low last season.

That was an obvious one...But, we would also like to suggest that coaches evaluate their teams perimeter shooting and offensive plays. Without a doubt, a powerful defense is an important part of the game - but you need a strong offense to score points and win the game!

Review this Drill: Dribble Weave Jumpers


Player #1 receives the pass from the Dr. Dish basketball shooting machine. On the catch, player #1 drives at player #2 on the wing and executes a dribble hand-off. Player #2 receives the pass from #1, takes a good hard dribble, squares up to the basket, and shoots the ball. The Dr. Dish Team Trainer now sends another pass out to the corner and player #2 will now catch and execute a dribble weave hand-off with player #1. Player #1 will catch the ball, square up and shoot.
